Buffalo's South Park
Botanical Gardens were designed by
landscape architect Fredrick Law Olmsted, who also designed New York City's
Central Park. His designs for Buffalo's parks including Front Park (now
Delaware Park), Parade Park (now Martin Luther King Park), and South Park were
displayed at the 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia.
The glass conservatory is a tri-domed steel frame building based on the
Crystal Palace and Kew Gardens Palm House in England. It was one of the
largest public greenhouses in the country. It was completed in 1899 and
gained national fame during the 1901 Pan American Exposition. Less than
a dozen Victorian greenhouses survive today.
In addition to the glass conservatory, the park was designed with a large pond
for boating, numerous walking paths, a ring road for horse carriages and a
bandstand for public performances. Alas, the boat dock, bandstand and walking
paths were never built. The ring road is now paved for cars. A nine-hole golf
course was added to the property in 1915. It probably sees more visitors now
than the conservatory does. :(

(Printable Clues)
A really bad slice on the seventh tee could send your ball into the pond.
But if you're lucky, you won't have to go any further than the hollow log.
Update:
The box is still in place, but the tee markers indicating which hole is which
are pulled in each fall for winter storage! You may want to wait for spring
for this one.

Since the railroad first began, there have been people that have ridden the
rails. For one reason or another, whether short on cash, or it was just time
for a change. The rail was the fastest mode of transportation. The sights
and sound of the old trains, and even now in this day and age trains hold a
special place in most of our hearts. Every time I see a train I stop to wonder
where it came from, and where it is on its way to. How many lives what is on
that train will touch. Now it is time for me to hit the rails. I have
watched the trains come and go. With the help of my friends I hope to ride
the rails of this great country. My name is Lobo the Hobo. I am a wandering
letterbox. If yo wouldn't mind, please take me from my current location and
plant me near the railroad tracks at some other location. But PLEASE, for
my safety and the safety of those looking for me, don't plant me too close
to the tracks themselves. As much as I enjoy the Railroad, I would never
want anyone to get hurt at my expense. I hope you enjoy my journey as much
as I will. Thank you for helping me on my journey along the railroad.
From Team Dakota:
This is a wandering letterbox. We would like it to work along the same basic
principal as a hitch hiker, except that instead of planting him in an already
existing letterbox, we ask that you plant him in an original location,
somewhere along a set of railroad tracks keeping with the hobo theme. When
you have found the box, please contact the current placer, so they can delete
the current clues to the box. Once you have placed the box in another location, post the clues as if it were your own box. The only thing we ask is that you
not change the name of the box. This way we, and other that the box has come
in contact with will be able to keep track of its progress. This box will
count as a Find as well as a Plant. We hope that you enjoy this box and help
Lobo on his journey.
Addition from Dagonell the Pirate:
Please keep me informed as to the location of the box. I'd like to keep the
table below as current as possible.

Update:
Box confirmed missing 08/10/06.
I'll be re-carving the stamp this winter and replacing it in the spring.
I have received word that the stamp was found and the box replaced.
I have NOT yet confirmed this. Consider it to "probably" be there.
I participated in the "Board Games of the 70's" Postal Letterbox. One of
the requirements was to make a stamp of a board game to stamp the logbook as
well as your personal stamp. I was an avid chess-player in the 70's and I
was captain of the chess team in my senior year of college, so I carved a
chess knight. Now, of course, I had create a letterbox for the stamp!
From
Wikipedia:
"The Knight's Tour is a mathematical problem involving a knight on a chessboard.
The knight is placed on the empty board and, moving according to the rules of
chess, must visit each square once." So, what does this have to do with a
Western New York letterbox? Well, you'll just have to experiment and find out!
