Anyone enrolled in a Computer Science
class can seek additional help in several ways. The Computer Science
Department offers peer tutoring in many classes. The room where
tutors meet with students is the Computer Science library/reading
room (WTC 205).
Tutoring can get you over a hump if you are
having a temporary problem, or provide on-going aid and
encouragement throughout the semester to make a difficult class
easier.
Computer Science Tutoring
- Who can use this tutoring program?
Anyone who is taking CSC 110 or CSC 111 for credit, although
some of the tutors are knowledgeable about 200-level courses as
well.
- When are the tutors available?
Generally, tutors are availabe in the afternoons all days except
Friday. There are some morning hours Tuesday and Thursday.
Scroll down to see the hours. This table of times is also posted
in the glass display case outside the Computer Science office in
WTC 207.
- How do I sign up to see a tutor?
You don't have to sign up. Just go to WTC Room 205 during
the hours.
- What can the tutors do for me?
The tutors can answer questions about UNIX, using the computer
systems at Canisius, C++ and other programming languages, and
some questions about the assignments, especially clarification
questions. Tutors cannot write code for you! Moreover,
the tutors probably do not have complete and detailed knowledge
of the assignments, so their help will be limited. For these
kinds of questions, it is best if you see your professor.

Academic Development Center
In addition, the Academic Development Center (OM 314) offers
peer tutoring in many classes, not just Computer Science.
The tutoring center in OM 314 is a college-wide
service open to any and all Canisius students for short-term help
in a wide variety of courses. If you are having trouble in
calculus, go see them. If you want someone to look over your
English essay or term paper, go see them. There are usually a few
CS majors who are hired by them each year to give tutoring help.
To make use of the tutoring center, just go to Room 314 of Old
Main and say that you'd like a tutor in a particular subject. If
someone is available, they will send you across the hall to meet
with that person. Otherwise, you can make an appointment or simply
come back when a scheduled tutor will be there.
