BEHAVIOR IN DEPARTMENTAL FACILITIES
Guidelines for proper behavior in the departmental facilities appear below. Treat others and the facilities with respect, and always leave the facilities as good, or better, than when you arrived.
Dos
Do handle the equipment properly. If you encounter a hardware problem, send a message to ‘root’ instead of hitting the equipment. Always leave the equipment in its normal state. For example, leave all cables connected, video displays ready to properly communicate for login with the computer, and PC’s ready to boot. Leave terminals and PC’s on during the day and when usage is heavy. If you are the last person to eave, turn all terminals, local printers, and microprocessors off.
Do pick up after yourself. Place all waste paper in a recycling container. If you find rubbish left by someone else, pick it up. This includes waste from meals in the seminar room or club room/library area. The department requests that the recycling bins be used for all white paper and waste bins be used for other garbage.
Do be considerate of other users. If you find someone is still logged in but is not in the area, log them off. Use mail to send the account a message identifying the terminal, giving the time, and stating that the account was still logged on. If you will not be using a terminal for a while, log off so others can use it. If any system is being used for work, do not play any recreational games.
Do back up your work.
Do plan ahead. Facilities are usually busiest a day or two before a project is due. If you start projects early, you can work around crowded times. Also, evenings and weekends are usually less crowded; however, note that the systems may be down during the day on Saturday for backups and system work.
Do make sure doors are closed and locked when you leave.
Do be considerate when dealing with public safety officers.
Do read your mail. If you receive email on multiple computers, consider forwarding your mail to one computer to make it easier t keep up to date.
Do follow the directions of the faculty and staff. If asked to present identification, to clean up your area, or to log off, or to leave, do so.
DO NOTs
Do not smoke in the
Do not eat or drink in the Advanced laboratory, machine room, and Microcomputer laboratory. This includes snacks. Use the hall or seminar room.
Do not block open locked doors, especially the external building doors.
Do not lock terminals for extended periods. It may be acceptable for short visits to the rest rooms. It is not acceptable to lock a terminal while you attend class, go home to get books, or visit and eat for half an hour.
Do not let unauthorized people use the facilities. Do not give door lock combinations to anyone. If someone has the right to access a room, the department will inform that person of the combinations needed to access the room. The following groups have permission to use the departmental facilities after standard hours: Computer Science majors and minors starting with their enrollment in CSC 212, and students working on special projects with departmental faculty. If you are not certain about an individual, ask to see College identification and see if the name appears on the list posted in the room. Anyone who is unable or unwilling to do so should be asked to leave. If the individual refuses, call Public Safety (2330) for assistance.
Computer Science facilities should not be used to produce documents or to accomplish other computer tasks for people outside of Canisius unless it is part of an approved educational task.
Furthermore, Computer Science facilities should not be used to produce documents or to accomplish other computer tasks for Canisius students outside the department. This is to avoid placing loads on the system which will slow down users attempting to accomplish departmental work. Students are reminded that some such ‘help’ may be cheating and would therefore violate College policy. This would result in both students facing disciplinary action.
If an individual acts inappropriately, departmental faculty and staff have the right to request that the person leave. For repeat offenders or blatant disregard for equipment or others, the department may impose other restrictions including limiting access for some period of time, removing the offender’s name from the facility access list, and freezing computer accounts. Drastic cases may result in removal from the Computer Science Department.
If no single individual is responsible for a problem or if the individual is unknown, the department may limit all student access for a period of time to correct the problem or to discourage future problems. For example, if the Advanced Lab is a mess, a faculty or staff member has the right to close the room for the day.
